With Mozilla moving into hardware on mobile, it also seems time to develop an environment policy. It wouldn't be too nice to see Mozilla lambasted by Greenpeace. Policies like whether to adopt hardware-supported codecs like H.264 because they save battery life would also have desktop implications in power-saving and therefore CO2 emissions wouldn't they? How about Mozilla's distribution network of download servers. Do they use green power?

I agree 100%, as you know, and have often tried to talk to people privately about better ways to get one's point across.

One thing I commonly hear from ranters, though, is that the rant wasn't their first attempt at trying to find someone to talk to about a question or problem. Often times they have filed a bug in Bugzilla, or have searched on a Wiki for information, or even asked in IRC or a newsgroup and gotten no response. As such, I've started now empathizing up front with people about how it can be hard to get attention, but going negative isn't a great option.

Even more reason to greet projects like yours that honour Project Gutenberg, his own lifetime project.

This is not ive been working on personally but its a big improvement that ive noticed is missing on the release feature tracking wiki page; Bug 573948 replace libjpeg with libjpeg-turbo.
libjpeg-turbo is 100-300% (2-4x) faster than libjpeg at decoding jpegs. This feature landed for Fx5.

The Feature List does not pull any of the information from the Feature Pages themselves, nor vice versa, so there's no connection between them.

The Feature Page status feeds into the Release Tracking page, which is/should be lists of the in progress items that are targeted to releases.

I'm still digging around trying to sort out better ways of doing this with the tools we have -- Dietrich just sent me info about Semantic Wiki stuff that might be useful.

How does this "status" indicator play with the status indicator in the feature detail page itself? See:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Fennec/Features/safebrowsing

That page uses the StatusAtRisk template which allows for a color change and text description.

This template then propagates up to the Release Tracking page, which inherits the color and text in the Status column (after an edit / save cycle to pull in the changes)

Yeah we still need to finish up restructuring the wiki and getting everything linked together properly. There should eventually be lists of features on each Roadmap (like the Feature Lists), and links on the main page to the various bits.

The Feature Lists are separate than the Release Tracking because Feature Lists are prioritized lists of what we are going to work on, while the Release Tracking is what is being worked on *right now* that is targeted for upcoming releases. So the stuff on the Release Tracking page is a tiny subset of what's on the Feature Lists.

My mistake. There are indeed links to Feature Pages from Feature Lists. I was confusing the latter with Release Tracking pages.

Actually, why are the Feature Lists and Release Tracking pages separate?

This sounds like a really, really solid approach.

I'm curious as to why the web pages aren't structured this way now. (Maybe they're not ready yet?) e.g. If I go to:

http://wiki.mozilla.org

I have no idea where to find 'Roadmaps'. Maybe I haven't looked hard enough, but shouldn't the page scream it out at the top anyway? (Like the 'Download' button on mozilla.com.)

The same thing happens when I look for 'Feature Lists' on the individual Roadmap pages, and there also appear to be no links to each 'Feature Page' from a given 'Feature List' page.

In fact, if it weren't for this fantastic post, I'd have no idea how to navigate wiki.mozilla.org.

Maybe this wiki restructuring will be done eventually, but I really think you could make some quick changes now that improve things immediately. Sure, I'm just an interested observer, but I'm guessing making those changes now would immediately improve developers' lives and also banish the cloud of confusion that has shrouded Mozilla's decision making for ... well ... longer than I expected. And if you achieve that, you also make it easy for new developers to jump on board.

Anyway, a very promising approach that (with discipline) could be game changing for Mozilla.

It is a very good post! I am a new manager and I was looking at having my 1:1 with my staff and manager more organized and more efficient. I will use this as a starting point and will adjust whatever could need to be adjust after a few 1:1.

Thanks for sharing this with us.

Hello Deb,

"Go To My Favorites" inside My Favorites opens up HTTP so the log in problem fires again. All urls that Personas Plus opens up should be HTTPS. The image of "Go to My Favorites" option is below. Just log in the GetPersonas.com. And after that use the "Go to My Favorites" option which will not log the user in although the user already logged in.

http://oi56.tinypic.com/28jfgns.jpg

The bug is actually described in:

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=639597

Although we regarded it as duplicate, it tells the description of above bug. So it should be reopened if possible.

The RC3 is working just as well with Thunderbird alpha builds as it did with Thunderbird 3.1... could we get compatibility bumped for Thunderbird as well please?

I might also add we launched new developer.mozilla.org - bug fixes, performance tweaks, 15 new languages, and a soft launch of "demo studio" (stay tuned)

Hey Dria -- Yeah, technically my books are self-published but the other Ridan authors are "indie produced". I was originally published through a small press called Aspirations Media Inc. and when I sold out the first print run the rights reverted back and my wife started Ridan.

She figured - in for a penny...in for a pound...so she's been adding authors to the roster. She has a good eye and the author's she's picked up really deserve some extra lovin'.

Robin belives in putting out books as good...orbetter than the traditional publishers so, yep, it's not surprising that many people didn't know they were made by us.

Thanks for blogging!

Maybe I'll wait 'til all-hands and see what non-apple stuff people have. The alienware laptop has made me very very leery of ordering hardware I haven't seen before.

Even more frightening is that they're moving to the same app store model for non-iDevices, and the same rules will likely apply. And then what? What's the logical end game here?

Just time to say "enough".
