Taming the firehose, redux

After looking at the legal requirements involved with sending out email to large groups of people, I decided it was probably best to look at some third-party email campaign services to use for the newsletter project (which remains unnamed, see below).

I evaluated several and am currently recommending we use MailChimp. MailChimp seems to have all the right answers to all the right questions about security, privacy, anti-spam policies, user-control, tools, formatting, data portability, pricing, and all the rest. Also they have a monkey. With a hat.

If you know of any reason we shouldn’t use MailChimp, please send a note to deb-at-mozilla-dot-com. Good reasons, please, not “HTML email sux!” We’re well aware that HTML mail is widely disliked and will (I promise, hand to heart) ensure that plain text and non-email formats are available.

As for naming the newsletter, we’ve had a host of suggestions so far, including: MozCast, Mozilla World, Worldzilla, The Mozilla Times, Mozilla Courier, Mozilla Roundup, Mozilla Connection, Mozilla Chronicles, MozPlug, Infozilla, Mozilla View, Mozillascape, Mozillanet, Mozilla Wire, The Mozilla Hub, Mozilla Week, 7 Days @ Mozilla, Newzilla, The Mozilla Report, The Mozilla Space, MozSS feed, SlashMoz.org, Our Mozilla, Condenzilla, Mozilla Source, Mozilla Unwrapped, The Mozilla Pot, Mozilla Untangled, Mozilla Herald, Mozilla Universe, Mozilla Express, Mozilla’s Cup of Tea, Mozilla’s Slice of Cake, Mozilla Weekly News, The Mozilla Inquisitor, Mozilla Free Press. You will notice that every one of these suggestions contains “Moz”, “zilla”, or “Mozilla”.

Today’s challenge is to come up with a name for a Developer/community-centric newsletter that doesn’t use “Moz”, “zilla”, or “Mozilla”. I’m not saying we won’t use Mozilla in the title, I’d just like to see what sort of creative zaniness you can come up with. My contribution here is: “Big Red Lizard”. I’m pretty sure you can come up with better. Post ‘em here! I still have a tshirt to give away.

Funny thing is, that we probably all thought it was a requirement to refer to Mozilla in some way.

Basically we have all these animal names and codenames, “Gecko”, “Firefox”, “[Thunder]Bird”, “Songbird”, “SeaMonkey” just to name a few of the more prominent. ;-)

I spent some time a year ago researching mailing services for a friend who was looking for one. MailChimp seemed to be the best of the bunch back then as well. I think it’s a good choice.
