Apparantly modern HDs collect all sorts of data on themselves, and you can get tools like one of the google desktop plugins to read and analyse the data to give you an idea of HD health. I haven't played with it yet so I don't even know what kind of data we are talking about here, but maybe you can find something similar for the Mac to tell you something about your HD.
