But that's always as a secondary to the audio. I really don't like having to chase them as my primary means of following the dialogue. But it's good to have the option so everyone gets to pick the way they like best :-) I really like subtitles when it’s noisy in the room (kids :-)) or the audio is low/poor, or it’s in a foreign language that I do understand because there will invariably be bits and pieces I won’t. But that’s always as a secondary to the audio. I really don’t like having to chase them as my primary means of following the dialogue. But it’s good to have the option so everyone gets to pick the way they like best :-)

Check out some of Kurosawa's other flicks from the same period for more great samurai action (Yojimbo and Sanjuro are both really excellent). Toshiro Mifune's The Man. Personally, I prefer the subtitles and have been watching the Zatoichi flicks with them in Japanese. I actually find the dubs more distracting because of the lip-synching and mismatched voices.
