Shared Whiteboard App?
December 11th, 2005 | Published in General, Internet, Work | 16 Comments
I’m looking for a shared online whiteboard application. Ideally:
- It will be free and open source. Free is necessary. Open source is a clear “nice to have”, but not absolutely necessary.
- It will allow whiteboard sessions to be saved and loaded.
- It will have background options — ie: the background could be quadruled for simple charting, etc.
- It will not require Flash or other plugins.
- It will have a variety of brushes or shape-drawing tools. This one isn’t strictly necessary, but it’d sure be nice to have.
- It will be cross-platform (in an ideal world, it will “just work” in, say, Firefox 1.5).
Don’t suppose anyone could point me at something like this? Thanks!

Check out Coccinella as well. It appears to be free and only requires that users set up a free account on jabber.org:

Yeah, unfortunately I’m looking for a drawing whiteboard more than a text whiteboard. I’ve found a few that are close-ish to what I’m looking for, but not quite there :/

Paul: cool. If this actually works, it’s “close enough” for what I want it for. Thanks!

The gnome yarr project also has a nice dhtml whiteboard among other features (http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/yarrr/).
They set up a demo site some times ago, but I can’t find it any more. And yarrr.gnome.org is password protected :-/

inkscape + inkboard lets you share an inkscape session across jabber with one (or more) users creating a large virtual whiteboard that’s as fully featured as inkscape is.

When I recently was looking around in Gaim development, I found this:
http://gaim.sourceforge.net/summerofcode/andrewd/blog/2005-08-05
It is a ”Summer of Code“ project which may get integrated into Gaim (hopefully soon).
Although this won’t feature your ”variety of brushes“.

I found a pretty cool collaborative drawing app:
http://www.frodrone.com/games.php
I think it’s Flash though and the only way to save is with print screen.
But it’s cross-platform and shared… It’s pretty fun when you get a bunch of people drawing at the same time.

I’m looking for something very similar but with a few distinct caveats. I run a wordpress blog with multiple authors and I want a shared whiteboard in the admin area that all the staff can use to leave notes for one-another.
Basically I need a but don’t know how to put one specifically in the admin dashboard. Can anyone help?
